Cup Race Day 2017

CELEBRATING THE CITY TATTERSALLS CLUB CUP AT ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE
Racing in Australia began when a number of thoroughbreds were brought to the colony from England from 1799 to 1803. While Sydney races were run in the years between 1800 to 1810, none were recorded. The first documented race happened at Hyde Park in 1810.

In 1837, the then Governor signed a scrappy piece of dirt in Randwick for a new racecourse. It was not until 1860 that what had become known as “the sandy course” was given a makeover which turned it into a first-class venue for serious horse-racing.

The first City Tatts Club Cup was run in 1900, the year of Federation. It was run again the following year, before being shelved for a decade until its recommencement in 1911. It has been run virtually every year since, apart from during the equine flu outbreak in 2007.

City Tattersalls Club’s annual Race Day commemorates our Club’s colourful heritage and longstanding connection to Sydney racing.

The Race Day and the Cup have become important fixtures in Sydney’s sporting and social calendar, and we look forward to continuing the legacy of this wonderful event in the years ahead.
